ASHAKIRAN CENTER FOR DEADDICTION AND COUNSELLING

1. Who we are. . .
ASHA KIRAN is translated as “Ray of Hope” which is true to the nature of deaddiction centre giving hope and confidence to those who get treated here. The center is situated at Palya a small village Hassan District on the National Highway 75 linking the cities of Bangalore and Mangalore. Asha Kiran at Palya solely caters to the needs of the persons with substance use disorder. While the purpose is to serve all the victims of substance abuse, the majority of inmates are alcoholics. Most of the people with addiction are from lower middle class and poor, under employed workers from unorganized or agricultural sector. The cold climatic conditions of Western Ghats could also be an added reason for addiction. It is a vicious circle that due to stressful life and poverty; they fall prey to alcohol and due to which they remain poor all along. The people are also victims of other social evils like illiteracy, child labour, caste discrimination, exploitation of women and children etc. Asha Kiran concentrates on changing the lifestyle of these persons, not just in deaddiction but promising a better life and dignity in the family and wellbeing of society.

Substance abuse is a progressive disease; hence, recovery too is a slow and prolonged process. The voluntary admission is rare and treatment, both physical and psychological is intense. We provide the pharmacology services by a psychiatrist doctor, and a full-time residential nurse. The patients are counselled by a qualified counsellor. A social worker for monitoring and accompanying the patients. A ward boy to assist the patients and domestic staff to maintain hygiene and cleanliness.

Deepavali @ Asha Kiran, Palya
Festival of Lights is a feast for everyone. Asha Kiran along with the staff and inmates celebrated Deepavali with a short meaningful prayer service. Br Arun explained to the inmates the meaning of Deepavali and its significance in the lives of the persons with addiction. Every member lit a lamp and made a personal prayer of his own. After the spiritual session, all the inmates gathered outside for fireworks and celebration. The inmates commented that this celebration was more meaningful and enchanting than they usually celebrate Deepavali at home.

Asha Kiran Ambulance Services
It is indeed an added feather to the cap of Asha Kiran when the new Ambulance (Tata Winger) arrived at the campus on 9th September 2022. Palya is a small village situated between Hassan and Sakleshpur under Alur Taluk. Taluk headquarters has just two ambulances for the emergency health services. Considering this requirement and also the need of an ambulance at Deaddiction Center, an ambulance was proposed and sanctioned. Br. Cyril blessed the vehicle while the friars, staff and inmates were present. The Ambulance is the contribution of Seven Island Shipping Limited Company of Mumbai through Corporate Social Responsibility. However, the community is grateful to Fr. Darick D’Souza for intervening with his friends to make this possible. The Ambulance is used for the emergency purposes of Asha Kiran as well as will respond to any emergency calls from around.
