Capuchin Krishik Seva Kendra - Bankal

1. Who we are. . .
Capuchin fathers have been working in Banakal, Mudigere taluk since 2002 and a series of programmes and trainings have been promoted to create awareness on health, education, human rights, savings, legal awareness and Income generating programmes. The organization has promoted self-help groups among women and children clubs under the name ‘VIMUKTHI’ which means liberation.

The organization is working in the 36 villages of Mudigere Taluk. The Project has promoted more than 135 Self Help Groups (SHG), 02 men SHGs and 20 children clubs. The Self-Help Groups have given them a platform to come together and discuss the issues which are affecting their lives and tackle them. In last twenty years the women belonging to scheduled caste, scheduled tribe, small and marginal landless laborers have immensely benefited from this project. Today approximately 2000 women are directly benefiting from the Project.

In these twenty years the organisation has been organising a series of programmes and trainings to create awareness on health, education, rights, savings and management, legal awareness and right to information. People are guided and motivated to start their own income generating programmes. The project has sensitized the SHG women to organize campaigns against alcoholism, HIV/AIDS, protest against social evils, letter campaign, agitations for drinking water, road, basic facilities. The project has promoted literacy programme, voluntary service, training on finance management and bank Linkages.

2. Programs

  • Children
    The programs and interventions that are actualized by the organisation to the children aim at creating a better future for the children and the society. The organisation has formed children clubs in different villages and these clubs provide a platform for the children to know about their rights, to exhibit their talents and leadership qualities. The organisation constantly conducts various child rights based programs, educational programs and recreational programs in different schools and villages. Celebration of yoga day, girl child day, children’s day, awareness on POCSO act and RTE Act, Chinnara Mela (Children Camp), distribution of school bags and school books to promote education, Interest free education loan, tuition classes are some of the programs that were recently held by the organisation. A total number of 400-500 children have directly benefitted from the intervention of the organisation. In this current year the organisation is planning to reach out to more children and continue the children related programs based on their needs and requirements.

  • Women
    The organisation began its intervention to the women with the SHGs which has grown now as a federation and has changed the lives of thousands of women. Women being part of these SHG groups have got an opportunity to be independent, self-sufficient and self-reliant. Being part of Vimukti, the women have come out of their traditional household position to the mainstreams of society by engaging themselves in small scale business, farming, working in government offices and being members of local administration (gram panchayats) etc., The organisation in a regular basis conducts women and society related programs like health related issues, legal issues and recreational programs. In the current year awareness on thyroid, varicose vein and medical check-ups, one day in field (Kesarad Onji Dina), tailoring trainings, awareness on ill-effects of drug addiction, awareness regarding women and constitution etc., were the main programs of the organisation for the women

Women’s day Celebration 2025
“Every Woman’s success should be an inspiration to another. We’ re the strongest when we cheer each other on”
The Women’s Day Celebration was held on 11th March by Vimukti SHG Federation and Capuchin Krishik Seva Kendra® in Banakal with great enthusiasm, focusing on the theme "Women’s Good Health, Family’s Good Health." The event aimed to highlight the importance of women’s well-being as the foundation of a healthy family and community. The program commenced with the procession march in Banakal which was inaugurated by Fr. Thomas, Asst. Priest of Our Lady of Nativity Church, Banakal and Mrs. Athika Banu, the president of Vimukti SHG Federation. The women walked in procession raising awareness through placards against atrocities that women undergo in the society. The depiction of Mother India under whose shelter we are all united and brave women like Kittur Rani Chennamma, Savitri Ba Phule, Mother Theresa, Onakke Obbavva increase the beauty of the procession. Later the celebration was continued in the Church Hall, Banakal. Fr. Fredrick Braggs, the Secretary of Capuchin Krishik Seva Kendra®, Ujire presided over the celebration. Dr. Kavyashri HL, BAMS and all the dignitaries inaugurated the program by lighting the lamp. Fr. Prem Dsouza, Parish Priest of Our Lady of Nativity Church, Banakal, Mrs. Renuka, Sub-Inspector of Banakal Police station, Mrs. Zarina, President of Banakal Gram Panchyath, Fr. Edwin Dsouza, Director, Mrs. Athika Banu, President of Vimukti SHG Federation and board members were on the dais. Fr. Edwin highlighted the importance of the day and welcomed all the dignitaries. Mrs. Renuka, in her address said that women should take time first to love themselves. You are not things
and dustbins to be used and thrown out, you are equal, you have the ability to achieve great heights and therefore take care of your health. She also advised that every girl child in your family should be give equal opportunities for their talents and interests.

Protection of Environment is my personal Responsibility: Awareness Drive
Capuchin Krishik Seva Kendra® in collaboration with Taruve Grama Panchayat and Grama Panchayat elected women representatives Federation (Sugrama) held an environment protection awareness drive at Kottigehara on 23rd & 24th of February. This drive was conducted to educate and inspire devotees undertaking the Padayatra to Dharmasthala about the importance of environmental conservation & protection. The campaign aimed to promote eco-friendly practices and responsible behaviour among the people. The devotees were made aware regarding the importance of protection of environment invited to plant saplings in their native places and to be part in successfully spread the message of environmental conservation. The initiative fostered a sense of responsibility towards nature, ensuring that faith and devotion go hand in hand with protecting Mother Earth. The visit of Mr. Kota Shrinivas Poojary, MP & Minister of Social Welfare Department and Backward Classes Welfare Department of Karnataka, along with his associates Mr. Parikshith & Mr. Gajendra, increased the vibrancy of this drive. His supportive words and joining hands in our drive through planting a sapling was a memorable moment of the drive. Mrs. Sushila Gopala, President of Taruve Gram panchayath inaugurated the drive by unveiling the program banner and awareness broachers. PDO Mr. Prakash, Mrs. Swaroopa, Vice president & Mrs. Smitha, member of Taruve Panchyath, Mrs. Geetha, Vice president Balur, Fr. Edwin Dsouza, Director of CKSK, Mr. Naveen Kumar, Coordinator of Sugrama, Mrs. Vindya, Mr. Siddanth P, CKSK staff, Vimukti SHG members and members of Sugrama Federation were present.

Promotion of Quality Education through Tuition Classes
The Promotion of Quality Education through Tuition Classes program was launched in 10 villages of Mudigere to support underprivileged children in improving their academic performance. The selected tutors provide subject-based coaching, mentorship, study materials to enhance learning. Along with this moral values, importance of cleanliness, discipline, songs are taught and games are conducted for the children. Despite challenges like lack of resources and irregular attendance, the program successfully boosted students’ confidence and academic skills. Parents and community members appreciated the initiative, leading to increased awareness of the importance of education. The program continues to empower children, ensuring better learning opportunities and a brighter future.

World Environment Day Celebration
As the saying goes, “When we as human beings solve the problems of the environment, all our problems will be solved by the environment.” Capuchin Krishik Seva Kendra®, celebrated this day of environment on 15th of June in collaboration with the forest department, local panchyath and nearby schools. The theme for the celebration was ‘Protection of the Environment is my responsibility’. A total number of 160 children participated in this celebration. Mr. Charan Kumar, Mudigere RFO was the chief guest and the resource person. In his address, about being children, how we can save our environment, different ways of protecting our environment were dealt with. After the awareness session, saplings were planted in the school and awareness broachers were distributed to the participants.

Vidhyasnehi Interest free Educational Loan
“Education is not preparation for life, but life itself” says John Dewey. Vidhyasnehi educational support is one such effort from Capuchin Krishik Seva Kendra, Vimukti, Banakal to bloom life of many poor children of Mudigere taluk. A small venture began in memory of Fr. Theophil Pereira, founder of CKSK, has continued for the fourth year. This year, on 02nd June, the organization supported 21 children from different villages of Mudigere Taluk. Mr. P. Vasudeva, well-known teacher and headmaster of Banakal High school was the chief guest along with Fr. Edwin Dsouza, Director.

SHG Federation Outing
As a part of an entertaining activity, a one-day outing was arranged by Capuchin Krishik Seva Kendra® at Banakal on 28th May. The SHG federation members journeyed to Madikeri&Baghamandala where they visited the temple, the birthplace of Kaveririver, Nisargadhama and the golden temple at Kushalnagar. A total number of 78 women participated in this outing.

Orientation on Income Generating Activities
The organization has been constantly informing its beneficiaries regarding income-generating activities. One more session was held on 13th May where the beneficiaries were enlightened regarding generating income through goat farming, candle preparation, vegetation and preparing rice papad. Visual clippings were also part of the session. A total of 153 members were part of this session.

Career Guidance
Career guidance sessions were conducted by Vimukti Banakal in two places, namely Banakal and Niduvale. The participants were informed to choose a better career based on their interest and abilities. SWOT analysis activity was done. This will help them find their strengths, weaknesses and opportunities. In total, a number of 103 participants benefitted from this session.

Bags for Self-Help Groups
Vimukti SHGs and the various activities for women are one of the primary interventions of the organization. In order to promote the activities of SHG groups, the organization has given bags which will be very useful to keep the books of accounts, reports and other documents related to SHG. Total 100 bags have been distributed to various groups in and around Mudigere taluk.

Convention of Vimukti Women SHG Federation at Banakal
“Self Help Group – A forward towards Empowerment” with this theme Vimukti SHG Women’s convention was held in Banakal on 05th of March 2024. 673 women participated in this whole day celebration. The convention commenced with a procession highlighting the importance of women’s rights, from Banakal Petrol Bunk to Police Station to Church Hall. The procession was inaugurated by Mr. Siddanth and Fr. Satish Fernandes. After the procession stage program was held in the Church Community Hall. Fr. Satish Fernandes, Director of Vimukti Charitable Trust, Pothnal, Raichur, presided over the program. Fr. Shanth Raj R., Director of Chikmagaluru Multipurpose Social Service Society, Hasan, Fr. Prem Dsouza, Parish Priest of Banakal Church, Ms. Rashmi A. M., Kabadi player, Mrs. Athika Banu, President of Banakal Gram Panchayath, Fr. Edwin Dsouza, Director of CKSK, Vimukti, Banakal, Mrs. Yashodha, President, Mrs. Parvathi, Vice- President, Ms. Sunanda, Secretary, Mrs. Devaki, Joint Secretary and Mrs. Savitri, Treasurer of Vimukti SHG Federation were the dignitaries on the dais. The 22nd Women’s convention of Vimukti Federation revolved around celebration of the success of women being part of Vimukti self-help groups, their empowerment and achievement in all sectors.

Chinnara Mela (Children Fest) 2023 – October 20th &  21st
Capuchin Krishik Seva Kendra®, Vimukti, Banakal held two days dasara camp for the children. The purpose of this camp was to engage the children in different extra-curricular activities, teach various practical lessons for the better future and to provide opportunity for the hidden talents. Total 68 children participated in this camp and benefitted from it. The various topics covered in this camp were relationship between the parent and children in this present time, leadership among children, awareness on reduction of plastic pollution and advantages and disadvantages of mobile addiction among children. Along with these awareness talks icebreaking sessions, quiz, action songs were conducted. Children performed various dances from their respective children clubs. Sr. Dr, Judy Lewis, Fr. Joel Lopez were the resource persons. Fr. Edwin Dsouza, the director, Mrs. Vindhya S. and Ms. Faiza coordinated the activities for both days.

Session on ill-effects of mobile on children
Mobile phones and social media platforms are a world in itself with merits and D-merits. The choice of usage that makes us slaves or masters of it. Today’s children need to be made aware about the merits of social media and make the best use of it to increase knowledge. Fr. Joel Lopes took a session on the ill effects of mobile on children’s life, academics and future. Displaying video about how children become slaves of mobile phones, the resource person enlightened the minds of children and advised them not to spoil their future by being slaves of social media. Total 67 children participated in this session.

Session on healthy relationship between parents and children in this present time
‘Appreciate your parents, you never know what sacrifices they have made for you’. In today’s context of modernization and technological growth a healthy relationship between parents and children is very essential to build a better future for children. Capuchin Krishik Seva Kendra®, Vimukti, Banakal held a session for parents and children on building a healthy relationship in their families. Sr. Dr. Judy Lewis, psychologist and counsellor explained regarding different aspects that need to be kept in mind to have a healthy relationship. In her informative session Sr. Judy, discussed about various questions and doubts in the minds of parents and children. Altogether, 76 children 32 parents benefitted from this session.

International girl’s day celebration
Marking the International Day of Girl child which is on October 11th, CKSK celebrated it on 20th of October. Fr. Edwin Dsouza, the director said that, “girls play a very important role in our families and society. We all have to respect them for the great role and sacrifices they do in their life. Girls need to be educated in order to understand their rights, to stand against the violation of their rights and to protect one another from being victims of these violences.” As a sign of wishing girls of their day a small flower was offered to all the girls numbering 46. Altogether 74Vimukti Club Children were present.

Educational visit of Vimukti Club children to Police station
‘Follow the rules and regulation and respect the law and lead a good life’ was the encouraging message to the children by sub inspector Ranna Gowda Patil, Banakal police station. CKSK, Banakal as a part of practical education to the children held a visit program to Police station on 20th October where in 78 children, 12 parents of children took part in it. This visit aimed at educating the children regarding the great service rendered by police department.
 

Awareness on Madaras Eye
These days’ people are in fear regarding the increasing rate of health issue called Madaras Eye which refers to infection of the outer membrane of the eyeball and the inner eyelid. It is also called as pink eye. In order to bring an awareness among the people CKSK held a short awareness program. Mrs. Sunitha, Asha
worker of Banakal vicinity informed the women of SHG regarding causes, the symptoms and treatment regarding Madaras Eye. As a precaution she also said that our surroundings, house, body parts should be maintained clean and tidy. Total 45 women participated in this session.

Kesaralli Ondhu Dina/ Kesard Onji Dina Program – A Day amidst the nature
“Nature is the greatest place to learn, to relax and to get healed”. Highlighting the importance of nature Capuchin Krishik Seva Kendra®, Vimukti Self Help Group Federation, Banakal conducted various activities for the children and women in the paddy fields under the title- ‘KesardOnji Dina/ KesarliOndhu Dina’ on 6th of August 2023. Back Race, Rely, Pulling the Areca leaf, Girgit Race, Ballon game, tug of war, treasure hunt were some of the activities held for the children and women. Mr. Jambu Raj Mahajan, PSI of Banakal Police Station inaugurated the event with lighting the Torch. Fr. Lancy Lobo, Capuchin Priest from Banakal, Mrs. Athika Banu, President of Banakal Gram Panchyat, Mrs. Leelavathi, Ex-President of Banakal Gram Panchayat were the chief guests for the inaugural session. Fr. Edwin Dsouza, the Director highlighted the purpose of conducting this
event and thanked all who have instruments for the success of this venture. Mrs. Vindhya S., Ms. Faiza, Mr. Siddanth, Mr. Ashok and Ms. Shravani assisted for the entire program Altogether 85 children and 220 women participated in all the games and enjoyed amidst the nature.

Celebration of Independence Day through Distribution of Educational Kit
To live in true freedom, education is the guiding path. Education will help the children to understand the freedom struggles, sacrifices of freedom warriors and learn the lessons for their life. Capuchin Krishik Seva Kendra®, Vimukti Banakal celebrated the Independence Day distributing educational kit to the vimukti club children from LKG to 10th std. Total 205 children received educational kit of compass box, umbrella and tiffin carry bags. Fr. Thomas Kalgadki, Banakal Church, Sr. Rose Clare, MC congregation, Mr. Lakshan, Ex-military personnel, Mr. Melwyn Fernandes, Ex- Military personnel, his wife Mrs. Lavina Fernandes, Mrs.Athika Banu,
President of Banakal Gram Panchyath, Krathik, children representative and Fr. Edwin Dsouza, were the dignitaries on the dais. The presence of ex-military personnels, their work and sacrifice for the nation aimed to be an inspiration for the children to serve the nation in different capacities.

Aati Celebration
Aati or Ashada is the month of torrential rainfall. During this season special eatables are prepared from various green healthy leaves and vegetables which are healthier. CKSK, Vimukti at Banakal to mark this season kept a small celebration in the office premises on 14th of August. 46 Vimukti SHG women participated in this joyful celebration where in importance of this season was highli
ghted and the special food which is prepared during this season were shared with each other as we share in our family. Some of the special dishes were patrode, halva, arashinaelegatti etc., Fr. Thomas Kalgadki, OFM Cap, Mrs. Vindhya, Mrs. Athika Banu, Banakal Gram Panchyath President were present.

International Day against Drug Abuse and illicit Trafficking
“People First: Stop stigma and discrimination, strengthen Prevention” is the theme for this year as we fight against drug abuse and illicit trafficking. The campaign this year calls to respect the people who are victims of addictions and highlights preventions of drugs. In order to raise awareness, CKSK, Vimukti SHG Federation and Ashakiran centre for de-addiction and counselling conducted a program at Ashakiran centre, Palya. 50 women from Vimukti SHG Federation, Banakal, 40 students of Govt. PU college, Palya and 15 inmates of Ashakiran, Palya participated in this awareness drive and benefitted from it. Dr. Punith, Professor and Psychiatric Resident Doctor of Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences and Fr. Arun Lobo, Director of Ashakiran centre for de-addiction and counselling were the resource persons of the day.

Contribution to Nalikali Children of Niduvale Govt. School
‘Quality Education’ is the fourth sustainable development goal. CKSK, Banakal has been conducting various programs and activities to promote education among the children. On 19th June CKSK, Vimukti Banakal accepting the request of Govt. primary school of Niduvale contributed 10 chairs for the children of Nalikali section in which there 16 children. These chairs will be benefitting to the children in the classroom and studies. Mr. Pradeep, the headmaster, Fr. Edwin Dsouza, Director of CKSK, MRs. Vindhya, staff, MRs. Yashodha, Mrs. Indra and others were present.

Educational support to Orphan & Poor Children
It gives an immense pleasure to write this small report of the program and assistance to the orphan and poor children of Mudigere Taluka with the generous contribution of Mrs. SugithaValderio. The program was held on 17th June in collaboration with Vimukti Charitable Trust®, Pothnal. As an educational support seven children were given educational kit like school bag, uniforms, note books, stationery and umbrella. This educational kit is given to seven children in which two are orphans, one is disabled and four who have lost their father and taken care by the mother with coolie work. Mrs. Athika Banu, president of Banakal Gram Panchyath, Fr. Edwin Dsouza, the director, staff, children and their parents were present.

Mobile Computer Training Centre at Niduvale
Capuchin Krishik Seva Kendra®, Vimukti Banakal has been conducting basic computer trainings for the children, youth and women from three years. More than 300 benefitted from this training. As an extension of this program CKSK has ventured into mobile computer training at Niduvale with the collaborative support of NiduvalePanchyath and Vimukti SHG women of niduvale cluster. On 19th June June two computers have been installed in the library of Panchyath. The organisation aims through this program to reach out more than 100 beneficiaries.

Vidhyasnehi Educational Support

Lancy, capuchin from North Province, Fr. Anand and Mrs. Valsa, High School teacher of Banakal High School handed over the cheques to the students who were present along with their parents.

Celebration of DR. B.R. Ambedkar’s Jayanthi
Ambedkar Jayanthi is celebrated every year on April 14 to pay tribute to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s contribution to the Indian Society and to remember his teachings and Ideals. Dr. Ambedkar was a strong advocate of social justice, equality, and human rights and his ideas continue to inspire people around the world. CKSK Vimukti at Banakal, celebrated this great day on 24th April and paid tribute by offering flowers to the photo of Dr. Ambedkar. 63 women of Vimukti SHG Federation participated in this short program. Fr. Edwin Dsouza, Director of CKSK, Mrs. Vindhya, staff, Mrs. Athika Banu, President of Banakal Gram Panchyath was present for the program.

Celebration of International Book Day
“The more that you read, the more things you will know, the more you learn, the more places you’ll go” . International Books Day is celebrated all over the world on 23rd April and it was meaningfully celebrated in CKSK Banakal on 27th of April. 34 children participated in this half day program in which various activities were done related to books and education. Children divided in different groups, through writing and drawing the pictures innovatively brought out the importance of books in their life. Fr. Edwin Dosuza, the director, Mrs. Vindhya, staff and Mrs. Savitri were present in this program.

Convention of Vimukti Women SHG Federation at Banakal
‘Human Rights are Women Rights’ with this theme Vimukti SHG Women’s convention was held in Banakal on 11th of March 2023. More than 850 women participated in this whole day celebration. The convention commenced with a procession highlighting the importance of women’s rights, from Banakal Petrol Bunk to Police Station to Church Hall. After the procession stage program was held in the Church Hall. Fr. Vijay Kumar, Councilor of Holy Trinity Province, Karnataka and chairperson of JPIC commission, Fr. Vincent Dsouza, Director of Vimukti, Chikkodi, Fr. Prem Dsouza, Parish Priest of Banakal Church, Miss. Ashika, Lawyer, Mrs. Sharadha, Anganvadi Animator, Banakal, Mrs. Athika Banu, member of Banakal Gram Panchayath, Fr. Edwin Dsouza, Director of CKSK, Vimukti, Banakal, Mrs. Yashodha, President, Mrs. Parvathi, Vice- President, Ms. Sunanda, Secreatary, Mrs. Devaki, Joint Secreatary and Mrs. Savitri, Treasurer of Vimukti SHG Federation were the dignitaries on the dais. Fr. Edwin Dsouza, the director of Vimukti, Banakal in his inaugural and welcome talk highlighted that Vimukti at Banakal celebrates 21st Women’s convention and today is celebration of the success of women being part of Vimukti and also a platform to know about women rights which are provided in our constitution. Ms. Ashika, advocate from Mudigere in her address explaining regarding women’s rights especially household rights, instructed the women to know and understand the rights. Mrs. Yashodha read out the annual report of the activities done in the year 2022-23. Fr. Vincent Dsouza, congratulated the women for huge gathering and encouraged them to grow in their life being part of Vimukti.

Income generating Activity – Honey Bee Farming
Capuchin Krishik Seva Kendra® at Banakal which aims to empower the women held a training session regarding Honey Bee Farming with the support of Capuchin Province of Emilia Romagna, Italy. Honey bee farming is the practice of maintaining and keeping bees and their hives. It is a type of business that involves nurturing and caring for bees to obtain bee products such as beeswax, honey, royal jelly etc., Mrs. Lilly Monis from Banakal gave short discourse on how to engage in honey bee farming, its steps, maintenance and the facilities provided by the government to do this farming. Altogether 65 women participated in this session and benefitted from informative session. Fr. Edwin Dsouza, the director, Mrs. Yashodha, President of Vimukti SHG Federation and Mrs. Vindhya, the staff were present.

Competition for the Women of SHGs at Banakal
In view of upcoming Women’s Day on March 8, Capuchin Krishik Seva Kendra, Vimukti at Banakal conducted cultural competitions for the SHG members of Vimukti Women’s Federation on 23rd January. The women enthusiastically participated in singing competition, dance competition, speech competition and rangoli competition. It was a platform for the women to exhibit their hidden talents and also participate in competitions. Altogether 58 women were present for the program.

Educational Excursion of Club Children @ Banakal

Capuchin Krishik Seva Kendra at Banakal, held an educational excursion for the children club members on 22nd January to PilikulaNisargadhama, Mangalore. Altogether 59 children participated in this excursion. Spending value able time in Pilikula the children visited Science center, Biological Zoo, Heritage village, Lake Garden and Botanical Museum. The children got a platform to improve their general knowledge and also connect with the school learning through practical demonstration. Later in the evening the children spent few minutes in Tannirbavi beach before the excursion could end.

Clean Environment Drive : Vimukti at Banakal
“When the Environment is clean one feels happy, motivated and healthy”- Lailah Akita. Capuchin Krishik Seva Kendra, Vimukti at Banakal in its effort to promote clean environment, has been encouraging the people to engage in clean environment drives in public places. The members of Vimukti SHG Federation as per their clusters have been engaging themselves in cleaning public places like temples, schools, anganvadis etc., On 16th of January the members of women SHGs of Niduvale cluster held this clean environment drive in the Govt. primary school of Niduvale. A total number of 28 women cleansed the premises of primary school.

Awareness on Women Health and Medical Check Up
On 19-12-2022 CKSKVimukti Banakal (supported of Emilia-Romagna capuchin province, Italy) and in association with Jyothi Hospital, Belthangady held an awareness session regarding the women health and health issues that are prevalent among women. Dr. Anooja from Jyothi Hospital conducted the awareness session and medical checkup. Sr. Denisha, Ms.Priya from Jyothi Hospital, Fr. Edwin Dsouza, Director,CKSK,Banakal, Mrs. Athika Banu, Gram Panchayat member, Banakal and Mrs. Vindhya, the staff were present. A total number of 60 women benefitted from the awareness session and 52 women underwent Medical checkup. The organization remains grateful to Jyothi Hospital for their support in our service to the society.
